When someone is compulsed to do something that results in a problem–like “having to” do drugs, or getting angry, or some other troublesome response–it can be very useful to eliminate the threshold so that they are no longer compulsed, opening the door to a more resourceful response. In a DVD recorded at the Milton Erickson Brief Therapy Conference, I demonstrate using Richard Bandler’s “Compulsion Blowout” method with a woman who had filled her home with stuff that she had accumulated, and who found it impossible to clear any of it out. Since hoarding is often in response to personal losses, I also had time to demonstrate the Grief Resolution method that my wife Connirae and I developed 20 years ago.
