Very interesting -- and counter-intuitive (I just finished reading Barbara Tuchman's THE GUNS OF AUGUST, about the beginning of World War I). I'm open to his conclusions, but wondering how Mr. Pinker folds these enormous world and regional wars of the 20th Century, where tens of thousands were killed in single battles and millions deliberately executed, into his calculations.

Great Review Steve!

It makes total sense.

I had two thoughts that kept coming up while reading your review.

1) it is funny (tragic really) how we have developed technology to eradicate any small gains by one or more big ones ( Boom! ) and that there now needs to be less of the human species to have so much more pain in a short time... spread so wide.

2) The bitter-sweet ( maybe just bitter) Dichotomous pain that the over population crowd must feel when considering this possible double bind.

Keep up the great work!

I will see you in the spring at Andy's event

Cheers,
